District Private Schools Won’t Be Able to Re-open for Final Year Students – GNAPS Chairman
Reverend Robert Seddoh, Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) in the Volta region’s South Tongu District, said it would be difficult for the district’s private schools to reopen for students in the final year to prepare for their final exams – due to lack of wage payment funds.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Rev. Seddoh said his teachers insisted that it would be difficult for them to return to school until salary arrears are paid and COVID-19 preventive measures are put in place.

He noted that most students in the District were helping their parents on the market during school closure, exposing themselves to the virus and that, “before reopening, we have to rethink how we run our dormitory and the canteen system in the different schools.”

Rev. Seddoh said, “We expect the Government to direct some stimulus package for small scale industries to us so that we can pay our teachers and also make the school environment ready to get the final year students back to school.”

He said government must also honor its promise to fumigate schools and provide teachers with nose masks as well.

In the wake of the pandemic, the South Tongu GNAPS Chairman also sent a distress call to other stakeholders to help private schools.

In the 10th address to update citizens on the enhanced national response to the Covid-19 pandemic on Sunday, 31 May, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced the partial reopening of schools for final-year from the basic to tertiary levels to enable them to complete their various programmes.

“Final-year university students will report to their universities on June 15th, final-year senior high school students along with senior high school 2 Gold Track students on June 22nd; and final-year junior high school students on June 29th,” said the President.
